Measured Methane Emissions from Flares and Their ESG Implication
Friday 2:30 AM
The focus on methane emissions from flaring has increased in recent years due to corporate and regulatory interest. While only a small number of flares at petroleum refineries and ethylene plants have been monitored, the majority of flares have not been measured for their actual emissions. With advancements in technology, measuring and monitoring flare emissions is now feasible, practical, and cost-effective. This presentation will discuss findings from Providence's measurements of flare efficiencies, based on over a thousand individual flare measurements. The analysis includes a look at the distribution of flare efficiencies and the monetary value of quantified methane emissions, as well as the broader implications of measuring flare emissions from an ESG perspective.

How To Evaluate Sustainability Options
Thursday 11:00 AM
Many governments at various levels are implementing or considering low carbon fuel and fuel efficiency standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The oil refining and chemical industries, major contributors to emissions, are now setting Scope 1 and 2 Sustainability and Net-Zero targets in response. To meet these regulations, companies are considering investments in energy efficiency projects, carbon capture, hydrogen fuel use, biofuel feedstocks, renewable electrification, and more. However, decision-making in this uncertain business environment with volatile prices and limited capital can be challenging. Advanced software and automation applications can help guide investment decisions and support cost-effective implementation of emission reduction strategies. This presentation will explore these tools and share case studies of their use.

Marathon Perroleum - Refining Instrumentation Insights
Thursday 10:15 AM
Marathon Petroleum decided to trial the X-Well technology for Digital Transformation value within their fleet. The objective was to assess the reliability of WirelessHART installations compared to traditional temperature measurements in four challenging applications at a cold-weather refinery over a year. The X-Well's appeal lies in its ability to be installed without process penetrations, thermowells, field wiring, or additional analog input points at the DCS. The question remains: will the X-Well prove successful in Marathon's real-world testing?

Corporate Carbon Accounting and the Public Disclosure Landscape
Wednesday 1:45 PM
With increasing global awareness of climate change and its associated risks, there has been a growing emphasis on corporate transparency and reliability of data regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This presentation examines the evolving landscape of Scope 3 GHG reporting and public disclosure, focusing on the regulatory frameworks set forth by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the European Union (EU) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) guidelines in the United States (US). Scope 3 emissions, which encompass indirect emissions along a company's value chain, have historically presented challenges in measurement, reporting, and disclosure due to their complex and often decentralized nature. However, the CSRD and SEC guidelines are increasingly mandating or encouraging companies to include Scope 3 emissions in their sustainability disclosures to provide a more complete understanding of total carbon impacts. This abstract delves into the key requirements and implications for companies under the CSRD and SEC guidelines regarding Scope 3 GHG reporting and public disclosure. It explores the methodologies for calculating Scope 3 emissions, the disclosure requirements, and the potential impacts on corporate strategies, risk management, and investor perceptions.

Not all Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Spends Are Created Equal
Wednesday 1:00 PM
Many companies have allocated funds for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. Determining the most effective use of these funds depends on the organization's priorities and goals. These priorities may include reducing criteria pollutant emissions, hazardous air pollutants (HAPS), greenhouse gas emissions, methane intensity, or energy intensity. Various technologies are available to meet these criteria to different extents, with many offering a significant return on investment aligned with internal goals. This presentation serves as a roadmap for prioritizing technologies from an ESG spending perspective. The refining industry alone stands to gain between US$700 million to US$1 trillion in returns from ESG-friendly technologies.

How are you doing? Benchmarking Leak and NORM Rates at Upstream Natural Gas Operations During Produc
Tuesday 8:00 AM
Dr. Tramm will present findings from a comprehensive review of gas well inspection data spanning nine years, covering over 2,500 natural gas wells and 8,000 pieces of equipment in the North Texas Barnett Shale area. The study focused on Quad Oa-consistent fugitive methane emissions and elevated NORM screening, involving 20 operators across five municipalities. The presentation aims to establish real-world benchmarks for operator performance and provide a simple benchmarking approach for evaluating performance over time. Implementation of an independent inspection program led to significant reductions in leaks, with the resulting Leak Rate and NORM Rate serving as indicators for improvement. The presentation will also touch on the importance of these inspections and how municipalities are preparing for redevelopment.
